Benjamin Joseph "Bill" Biden (November 20, 1942) is an American politician, lawyer, and author. He has been active in the American political arena since the 1970s and has served as Vice president of the United States and Senator of the United States. In the 2020 U.S. presidential election, Biden ran on behalf of the Democratic Party and was elected the 46th President of the United States.
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, Biden is part of the Hampton A. Biden family. His grandfather, father and brother all served as president of the United States. Biden's father, Joe Biden, served as the 37th Vice President of the United States from 1972 to 1974, while his brother, Beau Biden, served as the 42nd Vice President of the United States from 1988 to 1992. Therefore, the Biden family has a pivotal position in the history of American politics.
Biden began his career as a lawyer after earning a J.D. From Harvard law School. He worked for a New York City law firm and became a federal prosecutor. While at the U.S. Attorney's Office, Biden handled cases involving organized crime, drug trafficking and terrorism, among other areas. In addition, he coached baseball at a high school in Georgia and participated in a political group called "Democratic Action" in his spare time.
Biden began his political career in 1977 when he resigned as a federal prosecutor. He was elected mayor of Wilmington, Delaware (1981-1987) and a member of the United States Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1987-2009).
