Dozens injured in London's Apollo theater ceiling collapse

Part of the ceiling of London's Apollo Theater has collapsed. London's Ambulance service says they have treated 81 people and seven others have been taken to hospital with serious injuries. according to the London Fire Brigade, all those who were trapped have been freed.

The theater is in the heart of London’s busy West End theater district. It has 775 seats over four levels and was packed for a performance of the curious Incident Of The Dog in the Night-time. The reason behind the collapse is under investigation. The Apollo Theater was built in 1901. It is owned and operated by Nimax Theatres.

Eyewitnesses say they heard "a crackling" noise before the collapse at about 8:30 p.m. local time.

"We were watching and enjoying the show quite happily, and we were up in the balcony, a bit towards the back. We were about five rows in the front just there and we saw two, three people get up in the front row of the balcony bit. And then, like, quite quickly, the next row and the next row and they all started going that way. And then we heard a creak and then the ceiling, which is presumably plaster or something, it just slowly... it just went ’chtt’... the whole thing just collapsed, just suddenly like that. And instantly, a load of dust everywhere and you couldn’t see anything." Eyewitness said.
